October 2022 update
Pearson has signed a new three-year agreement with Monotype effective October 1, 2022, to license their font library for use in Pearson products. This follows previous agreements that have been in place since 2011.
The agreement is significantly different from previous deals as it is heavily weighted to cover use of Monotype fonts in digital products, which includes everything from fonts used to render product served via websites or Apps, or fonts that are embedded in the product.
The most significant difference is, by January 2025, Pearson will be obligated to pare down to a list of 2,500 Monotype fonts that can be used in Digital Product. These fonts will be referred to as “Production fonts” and over the coming months you will see changes within the Monotype Fonts portal to reflect this.
The Production font list will be limited to 2,500 individual font weights. Fonts within the “Production font” list will be fonts used in digital product and they will remain in this list for the lifecycle of the product.
Legacy digital products produced prior to September 30, 2022, will still be able to use and access all the Monotype licensed fonts that were available through that date.
Fonts used for Printed product will be accessed via a separate list from within the Monotype Fonts portal.
More information on these changes and access rights will be provided over the coming months.
